ABOUT ME

My infatuation with Japan started during a family trip to Expo 88 in Brisbane where I was captivated by the Japan Pavilion. Thinking about it, my childhood love of Japanese TV shows like Monkey Magic and Astro Boy probably also played a part! In high school, I embarked on a transformative one-year exchange living with a Japanese family in the rural northern prefecture of Akita. Determined to deepen my understanding of Japanese culture and society, I then pursued studies in Japanese, anthropology, and international politics at Tsuda College in Tokyo and the Australian National University in Canberra.

18 Years with the Japanese Government

After graduating, I embarked on a life-changing experience living and working in the enchanting sub-tropical islands of Okinawa. The distinct identity of these islands further solidified my commitment to promoting and preserving the richness of Japanese culture. Consequently, I relocated to London, where I served as the Head of Marketing & Communications for the Japan National Tourism Organization for nearly 14 years. During my tenure, I had the opportunity to contribute to numerous significant projects, ranging from coordinating TV shoots and press trips to developing comprehensive marketing campaigns. I also played a vital role in crisis communication efforts after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Bringing Japanese Culture to the World

My vast experience in promoting Japanese culture and organizing events is testament to my ardent passion for Japan. As a Director at Japan House London and as Head of Japanese Experiences at Pantechnicon, I orchestrated a multitude of engaging events that celebrate the diversity of Japanese culture. From sake supper clubs and guest chef dinners to craft workshops and cooking classes, my collaborations with Japanese creatives have showcased the multifaceted aspects of Japan's arts, crafts, and cuisine to international audiences. See the Experiential Marketing section for a more detailed account of these diverse events and experiences.

Representing Japanese Destinations & Creative Talent

Fluency in the Japanese language, certification as a sake sommelier, a diploma in journalism, and the GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism are a testament to my dedication and expertise in this field. What truly fuels my endless fascination with Japan is the country's remarkable regional diversity. Having explored 46 of Japan's 47 prefectures (just Gunma to go!), I am acutely aware of the undiscovered treasures that lie beyond the well-trodden paths of Tokyo and Kyoto. It is my fervent mission to support these lesser-known destinations in showcasing their unique offerings and to amplify the work of talented artists, chefs, brewers, craftspeople, and designers throughout Japan.
